North Avoca Farm
The History of Our Farm
North Avoca Farm consists of ten acres of woods, ten acres of scenic stocked gravel pits and a few acres of tillable ground for a total of thirty acres only a quarter of a mile from the banks of the Vermilion River.
My family farmed this and the surrounding acreage for many years. However, I have lived here for only thirty years. Our house was built using posts and barn siding salvaged from local barns destined for demolition.
Growing up in a family of 19, I “grew up gardening!” We were mostly self-sufficient in that we had our own cows for milk, steers, hogs and chickens which we processed during our annual butchering days.
We had a sizeable orchard with apples, peaches, cherries and pears in addition to a vegetable garden where we grew and harvested as much as we could to store for the coming year. My Mother started as many of her seeds as possible beginning in Jan. or Feb. Little did I know (when I was young and protesting my gardening chores) that I would someday share her love for the garden.
Growing crops commercially for five years selling pea shoots and pea tendrils, rhubarb, tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers, beans, herbs, and various other produce, plus apples and pears from my small orchard, my ultimate goal is to find several unique & interesting products to grow and sell as well.
Making it
all worthwhile are the wonderful comments from locals who purchase our
products and being able to provide renowned restaurants with healthy
produce.
Our Family
Members
My husband Perry assists with the tillage and weeding. Adam, my 20 yr. old son, helps out with weed control also. In addition, he is going to school and working for my brother on his farms where they practice certified organic farming of corn, soybeans and wheat.
Due to
this exposure, Adam has decided on an Ag career with a focus on
organics. My daughter Shannon, is a college student and helps out
whenever her time permits.
